BEETHOVEN: SYMPHONY 4 (Concertgebouw Orchestra, 25 April 1940).
BEETHOVEN: SYMPHONY 5 (Concertgebouw Orchestra, 18 April 1940)

For nearly 50 years Willem Mengelberg was chief conductor of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra. His reign there started in 1895, when he succeeded Willem Kes. Mengelberg conducted his last concert with the orchestra in 1944. As a conductor he was demanding. He was a perfectionist, striving for the highest possible result. In building and developing the orchestra, this perfectionism enabled him to achieve astonishing results in terms of building and developing the Concertgebouw Orchestra. Numerous recordings, made for record companies or live before the microphones of the Dutch broadcasting organisation in Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Strauss and Mahler document Mengelberg as one of the greatest conductors of his time. His dramatic rendition of Bach’s St. Matthew’s Passion became world famous.

Hans van Ispelen (1947-2014) remastered the recordings in our download program to a point that was previously unthinkable. These remasterings let us hear Mengelberg in the glittering, full dynamic sound as it was present in the original recordings. 'Mengelberg remastered' is a time machine that brings one back to the era of one of the World’s most remarkable champions of a musical tradition that is now gone. Info on Willem Mengelberg / THE EDITION can be found here.
